My Counselling Approach
-
As a trauma-informed counsellor, I combine a range of approaches and techniques to best meet your needs at any given point in time during our therapy together. I will meet you with empathy and without judgement.
I am mindful that everyone has relationships and life circumstances in which they are operating, so work with techniques that suit you.
If desired, grounding techniques start sessions, which can focus on the body or breath, adapting to any disability you may have.
In therapy we may look at how your thoughts affect behavior; learning to become more aware of internal patterns. Together, we can then devise personalised techniques for you to feel in control and change your feelings for the better.
I am a compassionate and friendly professional who brings a sense of play and creativity to sessions but will tailor this to suit you on any given day.
-
I operate from an anti-oppressive and de-colonial stance meaning that an understanding of structural oppression informs my work.
I am not going to normalise, excuse or encourage you to accept injustice, prejudice or discrimination. Instead, I offer a safe and non-judgemental space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings and process what is happening for you. I invite you to use whatever language you need to, whilst I am alongside to support you in acknowledging and exploring difficult, uncomfortable and distressing themes.
I will journey alongside you through uncertainty and difficulty, celebrating wins and your strengths along the way.
My hope is to support you in recognising your own worth and feeling empowered to believe that who you are is already enough.
-
I often invite the opportunity to use visualisations, metaphor, drawing, collage, gentle movement and compassionate mindfulness.
Everything is an invitation which will be explained before it is offered. I adapt my approach to suit you depending on what you feel comfortable with, which can vary between sessions and even within sessions.
Working creatively utilising something you as the client are comfortable with and knowledgable about can be highly effective. Former clients have introduced Pokémon, films and video games as a medium through which we can discover and explore thoughts and feelings, leading to participants better understanding themselves and how they think and feel.
Creative approaches are possible for both in person and online counselling sessions.
-
Everyone is unique and so is their therapy, so if you have ideas about how you would like to work, this is something we can discuss. I adapt my approach to suit you; it is your therapy space.
-
I am passionate about difference and diversity and strive to be actively inclusive of everyone. I am happy to discuss any accessibility requirements you may have and will do my best to accommodate them.
I have experience working with neurodiverse and physically disabled individuals. Fidget toys, lack of eye contact or an arrangement to suit you are all welcome.
The Beehive Centre Accessibility for in person sessions.
All questions are valid and I realise there are lots of factors that go into feeling safe, especially when something is new and different.
-
